The Dysrhythmics World Tour and Vic & Vern's EMS, STAT Rescue, Car Wash and Video Rental ball caps
In 1983, Rich Obertots, after 11 years as a full-time national touring musician changed his career to become a paramedic to get "off the road" to raise a family and focus on songwriting and recording.
Little did he know that soon, he would merge music and medicine and be on the road again to inspire, entertain and educate EMS, Air Medical and myriad other professionals in healthcare with John Chamberlin and a crew of other creative, motivated and whimsical individuals to be known as, The Dysrhythmics.
Image: Vic (John Chamberlin) Victim (James O. Page) Vern (Rich Obertots) in Australia
Thousands throughout the USA and Australia would attend their medical event concerts and "Seminars with Songs" and purchase audio-cassettes, CDs, "Mocha-Code-Mugs" and more novel medical musical offerings over the years (circa 2023, requests keep coming... thanks!)
But in 2000, John and Rich formed a firm that would come to be known as ThinkThroughTools, and they focused on Outreach and Business Development full-time - beginning with STAT MedEvac and working with clients to grow numerous other Critical Medical Aviation programs throughout the USA. This focus would not allow energies to be devoted to their comedic and inspirational medical musical group.
During the past decades, individuals continued to communicate asking to purchase The Dysrhythmics music when their audio-cassettes had "worn out" or been "taken by the ex" or when their CDs had been "eaten by a grizzly bear" during a wilderness MED exercise. But all inventory had been sold out.
TIME FOR A DYSRHYTHMICS RESUSCITATION
Well, the time has come to re-connect with fans/family and re-introduce the group to the world. And - thanks to the digitizing of music - we can now make the humorous and inspirational songs available again.
For those unfamiliar with "Vic & Vern Traumanowski," the owners and operators of Vic & Vern's EMS, STAT Rescue, Car Wash and Video Rental, and for those that were fans of these over-the-top guys from "Quintucketbucket, Wisconsin" - one of the first songs penned and recorded by The Dysrhythmics was, "Runnin' Red." Here, for some, is a fix of nostalgia narcotic and for others your first dose of The Dysrhythmics.
RUNNIN' RED
The recording begins with an array of air and electronic sirens wailing, screaming engine roars and screeching/squealing tires,,, here are the lyrics:
We go nuts for blood and guts
We want full-fledged amputations, not wimpy cuts
Give us gore and give us more
Come on pretty mama, you know we thrive on trauma
'Cause we're hard core
Give us a chest to decompress
A complete evisceration; we love a mess
Keep your psych, give us a crich
A stabbing on a stairway, an impalement through the airway
That's what we like
(Chorus)
We're runnin' red, runnin' red
Lights and sirens screaming through our heads
We're runnin' red, runnin' red
You might say that we're slackers
You might say that we're whackers
...but, We're runnin' red!
We got a code, we hit the road
100 miles an hour; school zone mode
We crash each light, 'cause SPEED IS MIGHT
Road kills by the millions through play grounds and pavilions
We got a right!
Our scanner's hexed, the "BIG ONE's" next
For a major league disaster, we'd give up sex
Crash through a mall, to jump a call
Keep that turbo hummin', Vic & Vern are comin'
Let it haul
We're runnin' red, runnin' red
Lights and sirens screaming through our heads
We're runnin' red, runnin' red
You might say that we're slackers
You might say that we're whackers
...but, We're runnin' red!
(Bridge)
I know we seem a bit extreme
Gage and De Soto fill our dreams
We're on a mission, a crusade
5,000 speeding tickets paid
We're runnin' red, runnin' red
Lights and sirens screaming through our heads
We're runnin' red, runnin' red
You might say that we're slackers
You might say that we're whackers
...but, We're runnin' red!

THEY ARE CALLED DRESS REHEARSALS FOR A REASON
After graduating from Youngstown State University with a concentration in Emergency Medical Services and Applied Science, nationally registered paramedic Rich Obertots took on the position as EMS/Trauma Coordinator at Sharon Regional Hospital in Sharon, PA. When the Vice President of Marketing, Ed Newmeyer became aware that Rich had been composing humorous and inspirational songs about working in EMS and hospitals - the two "conspired" to orchestrate a performance at the upcoming hospital's annual Christmas Party for all employees.
Rich set forth to compose songs that would include and hopefully appeal to individuals from all departments. "These Hands" had already been written, it applied to everybody and it would be the anchor inspirational anthem. CHORUS:
THESE HANDS CAN MEND A BROKEN LIMB
THESE HANDS HELP HEARTS SURVIVE
BUT MOST OF ALL
THESE HANDS KEEP DREAMS ALIVE
Another tune, "Ancillary Services" was a whimsical high-energy tribute to ...the silent force in the healing course - the myriad of staff "behind the scenes" that are just as vital as the clinicians and technicians. Here's the chorus:
We are the operators, we work in maintenance
Housekeeping’s our vocation; because it pays the rent
We serve employee lunches; we paint the doors and walls
We stock supplies in bunches
We’re the silent force in the healing course
We take pride in what we do, because we know we make a difference too
Ancillary Services (That’s what we do)
Ancillary Services (Our work has meaning too)
Many other songs would be composed and recorded so that the performance validated, humored and inspired each individual in the venue that worked at the hospital - and - to some extent - those attending with the employees.
Rich partnered with his professional musician and singer/composer friends, Kirsti Manna and her husband Bill Warner. Kirsti would join Rich on stage to sing and raise hell. Bill would be the sound and light engineer.
(Drill way down this page to learn more about what Bill and Kirsti are doing these days. Remarkable.)
After months of recording and preparing - the evening came for the first concert of The Dysrhythmics.
The sound system and lights were geared up - the audience was ready - and - with high energy and volume, The Dysrhythmics opened the show with a parody of the Kool and the Gang song "Celebration" called "Intubation." Rich and Kirsti burst on to stage - both holding laryngoscopes in one hand and ETs (endotracheal tubes) in the other. Kirsti's outfit was traditional surgical scrubs and Rich wore those - but he also slipped over his scrubs, MAST (Military Anti Shock Trousers) [See Photo Above Left].
SURPRISE! Massive Adrenaline + MAST PANTS = Trouble!
The song and satire immediately triggered smiles and laughter - even for those that had no idea why it was not so good to "tube that right main stem bronchus." Kirsti and Rich had the audience clapping on 2 & 4 and many got up to dance. When the tune ended - the applause roared and it was clear that this first-time-test was working. Endorphins were being produced!
However, after the applause subsided, it was time for Rich to thank the audience and announce what was coming up next. The problem was, Rich had never rehearsed dancing and singing and jumping at high energy wearing the tight MAST pants - which were designed to compress the abdomen and legs to ideally force oxygenated blood to the vital organs and brain when an individual was hemorrhaging. He virtually could not breathe. He had completed the song INTUBATION and then... presented to all as if he actually needed to be intubated!
So - as he was about to collapse - Kirsti stepped up to greet the audience - Rich grabbed some water and tried to loosen the upper portion of the MAST trousers until he could regain his composure and ability to oxygenate, talk and sing.
Lesson learned about what occurs when massive adrenaline surges and high cardio stimulation are mixed with MAST PANTS.
From there on the concert went very well. Ed Newmeyer relaxed knowing he was probably able to keep his job (because he may have been at risk of losing it had this concert failed) and The Dysrhythmics "test" proved that the concept of coalescing music and medicine with humor and inspiration could work.
In the future - the MAST PANTS worn by performers would continue - however - conditioning and practicing singing, jumping and dancing in them would occur.
Here are the full lyrics to the parody of Celebration - Intubation which would often be the opening song for future concerts of The Dysrhythmics.

Ya Hoo, Ya Hoo
Intubate everybody, Come on (It’s an intubation)
Intubate everybody, Come on (It’s an airway sensation)
There’s a respiratory problem here
An intubation is needed very clear
So grab your Mackintosh and your Miller too
We’re gonna pass some tubes right through for you
Intubation, let’s all tube and have a good time
Intubation, vallecular groove’s looking oh so fine
Two holes so close together
It’s up to you, what’s your pleasure
Close your eyes and shove it in, Come on!
Ya Hoo, (It’s an intubation)
Ya Hoo
Intubate everybody, Come on
Intubate everybody, Come on
Now just sweep that tongue to the side
That epiglottis will try its best to hide
So get your suction and your trusty stylette
You’re bound to tube that right main stem bronchus yet
Come on now
Intubation, let’s all tube and have a good time
Intubation, vallecular groove’s looking oh so fine
Two holes so close together
It’s up to you what’s your pleasure
Close your eyes and shove it in, Come on!
Ya Hoo (It’s an intubation)
Ya Hoo (It’s an airway sensation)
Intubate everybody, Come on
Intubate everybody, Come on
(We’re gonna have a good time tonight
Let’s intubate, It’s alright) x 4
Ya Hoo, (It’s an intubation)
Ya Hoo, (It’s an airway sensation)
Intubate everybody, Come on
Intubate everybody, Come on, Come on, Come on, Come on!

"Looking Up to You" The Dysrhythmics tribute song to Critical Medical Aviation; Available at Amazon Music, Apple Music, iTunes & More
To the majestic machine, they travel light they travel lean
It's for life's concern, that their rotors turn to another LZ
Into the blackness they sail, their metal ship seems so frail
But the strength's inside, their skills applied
humble heroes in flight
To the horizon they will fly
On winds of hope they cross the sky
They risk it all for you and I
Saving lives from aloft, may each landing be soft
May each course be true
WE'RE LOOKING UP TO YOU
All the things you have seen
may often times seem routine
But when shift is through, there's a part of you
holding on to a dream
That every time you return
to smell that Jet A that burns
the part you played, was a difference made
You're a blessing on Earth
To the horizon they will fly
On winds of hope they cross the sky
They risk it all for you and I
Saving lives from aloft, may each landing be soft
May each course be true
WE'RE LOOKING UP TO YOU
I know that sometimes, your heart will be breaking
You'll start to question the chances you're taking
"There's a time and a place and a season"
A time to let go - if you have reason
To the horizon they will fly
On winds of hope they cross the sky
They risk it all for you and I
Saving lives from aloft, may each landing be soft
May each course be true
WE'RE LOOKING UP TO YOU

THESE HANDS
When you got into this great human cause
You had a noble dream
You’ve worked long and hard to get where you are
Some things aren’t always what they seem
You’ve seen a lot of pain so many tears
It’s hard to let that go
Sometimes you wonder why you carry on
But there is one thing we all know
CHORUS
THESE HANDS CAN MEND A BROKEN LIMB
THESE HANDS HELP HEARTS SURVIVE
BUT MOST OF ALL
THESE HANDS KEEP DREAMS ALIVE
Let there be no doubt your work’s profound
You’ve made this world a better place
You’ve touched so many lives memories abound
To put a smile upon your face
(Chorus) THESE HANDS…
Keep your chin up I know at times it gets rough
But you have got the right stuff
So – Keep on believing
Keep believing
(Chorus) THESE HANDS…

Lyrics & Arrangements © Richard M. Obertots, MBA, NREMT-P (ret) – permission granted to use and abuse these
Oh Light Bar Tree (performed to “Oh Christmas Tree”)
Oh light bar tree oh light bar tree
Don’t you know we worship Thee
Oh light bar tree oh light bar tree
Shine your light of trauma glee
Let your rack of twenty strobes
Stimulate our frontal lobes
Oh light bar tree oh light bar tree…”We’re late for lunch!” – Let’s run CODE 3!
Deck the Halls (performed to “Deck the Halls”)
Deck the halls with lots of patients
Fa la la la la la la la la
Heal the sick both young and ancients
Fa la la la la la la la la
Pray to God they have insurance
Fa la la la la la la la la
Or we’ll “de-fib” at lower currents
Fa la la la la la la la la
Yes we know our work is science
Fa la la la la la la la la
Patient’s give their full compliance
Fa la la la la la la la la
Treat them with our new devices
Fa la la la la la la la la
An AED that shreds and slices
Fa la la la la la la la la
The Compression Song (performed to “The Christmas
Song… Chestnuts Roasting”)
Chest compressions on a mannequin
Just don’t have that snappy feel
Give us a chest we can crack and compress
Cause we’ll be pumping with our heels
Imagine how that feels
Silent M.I. (performed to Silent Night)
Silent M.I., no way to die
Just like that, lights go black
All those times your angina had warned
Of deep denial you had been scorned
Now the big one has come
Next time you won’t be so dumb
I.C.U Rock (performed to “Jingle Bell Rock”)
I.C.U., I.C.U., I.C.U. Rock
I.C.U. roll to patients in shock
Two in the morning alarm tones will sound
Mr. Kazinski’s going down
I.C.U., I.C.U., I.C.U. Rock
Trust us we know our stuff
Quality care money back guarantee
We’re the best in town
But if your vent breaks down
We’ll gladly discount our fees

OUTREACH ROCK
(Adapted; Elvis Presley – Jail House Rock)
We got toned out on a trauma call
Grabbed all the give aways that we could haul
A fist full of pins and a bunch of hats
Forget patient care we need to boost our stats
Let’s Rock
Outreach Rock
Every paramedic, nurse and Doc
Is gonna feel our outreach rock
Heard competition’s got brand new shirts
Out in OUR market tryin’ to win converts
We’re gonna head ‘em off – gonna get hard core
Our mission is attrition àThis is Outreach War!
Let’s Rock
Outreach Rock
Every paramedic, nurse and Doc
Is gonna feel our outreach rock
We Give Away
(Adaptation: Not Fade Away – Buddy Holly)
I’m gonna tell ya how it’s gonna be
I’m gonna win their loyalty
Whatever it takes to get more trips
Continuing ed - going out for “sips”
We’ll deliver pizzas night and day
To keep the competition far away
No matter who asks – we’ll give them stuff
We can’t be perceived as being rough
Chorus (John and Tami pass / throw out)
We give away, (Don’t Miss It) We give away (Don’t twist it)
Free give aways
We give away, (Don’t Miss It) We give away (Don’t Twist it)
Free give aways
Every day we get requests
Friends and family crew and pets
Our budget’s tight – seems no one cares
We’re gonna have to hawk our office chairs
Cups and mugs and mouse pads here
Just like socks they disappear
To the highest standards we subscribe
How dare they say we offer bribes
We give away, (Don’t Miss It) We give away (Don’t twist it)
Free give aways
We give away, (Don’t Miss It) We give away (Don’t Twist it)
Free give aways
Schmooze Me Tender
(Adaptation; Love Me Tender – Elvis Presley)
Schmooze me tender schmooze me sweet
Let that BS flow
I will make your day complete
Please let your patient’s go
Schmooze me tender – probe so deep
Your transports we’ll fulfill
1, 2, 3 ,4 I love you – get ready to be thrilled
And make darn sure you give us patient’s we can bill!
OUTREACH DOG
(Adaptation; You Ain’t Nothin’ But A Hound Dog – Elvis Presley)
You ain’t nothin’ but an outreach dog
Crying all the time
You ain’t nothin’ but an outreach dog
Got golfing on the mind
You’re a partying fool with a job description no one can define
You say that you’re “Best in Class”
Competition just revealed
The state’s gonna sue your ass
Your CAMTS has been repealed
EMTALA’s on your case for setting up illegal transport deals
(Vic & Vern …. What’s your ETA…. 5 … Hours)
You aint’ nothing but an outreach dog
Your crews are always late
You ain’t nothing but an outreach dog
Are any of them straight?
Living Outreach life – nothing else could be so great
Living Outreach life – sucking’ up to folks irate
Living Outreach life – nothing else could be so great
